Supporting your research

In addition to financial aid, RISD offers a range of funding and professional practice opportunities to graduate students. These include grants for graduate research, Wintersession teaching opportunities and career counseling and support that will help you get the most out of your education.

RISD Career Center

RISD Careers is a major resource on campus offering individual advising, portfolio reviews, workshops and seminars for undergraduate and graduate students over the course of their education. Expert counselors assist students interested in learning about and applying for internships, grants, residencies, Fulbright fellowships, RISD's Maharam|Steam Fellowship and additional funding opportunities.

Graduate Studies Grant

As one of RISD's signature research programs, The Graduate Studies Grant (GS|Grant), is a challenging, proactive way for outstanding graduate students to acquire financial resources through a streamlined proposal process. This program was launched with guest lectures, grant writing workshops and other programs to encourage and support graduate students’ research, creative work and capacity to seek external funding. In 2015, GS|Grants awarded $90,000 to support 25 graduate research projects that took students across the globe.

As a whole, GS|Grants propose a broad set of questions including: What are RISD’s modes of research production? How does graduate-student research navigate between studio-based pedagogy and the field? What is empirical evidence in the arts and what is its impact? Though these questions are not new, they are persistently relevant. Most importantly, as these projects demonstrate, GS|Grants underwrite work that problematizes any single definition of research.
